Evolved Self is a fashion editorial exploring the constant transformation of structure and identity, questioning the body's potential to reshape itself. In this interview series, we spoke with the creative minds involved in Evolved Self about their design philosophies, creative processes, and perspectives on the future. One of these creatives is designer Melis Özkan:
How would you define yourself and your creative identity?
I define myself and my creative identity as a constantly evolving structure with expanding boundaries. I enjoy experimenting with new materials and techniques in my work. Each piece I create teaches me something new during the process, which is the most exciting aspect for me. I love establishing a connection between the materials used and the concept of my work. Textures and handmade details create both a tactile and visual experience in my projects. I approach textile art with the same sense of curiosity and discovery as I do illustration. In my illustrations, I also prioritize layered storytelling and texture. I love evoking curiosity and try to reflect this in my work. Rather than presenting what I want to convey directly, I value allowing the audience to discover it on their own. For me, the creative process is an act of exploration and reconstruction.
When I first shared the concept of the Evolved Self shoot with you, before the actual shoot even took place, what was the first word or visual that came to your mind?
The word that came to my mind was "transformation." This transformation can be both internal and external. However, I believe every transformation starts from the heart. The core idea of my work was to explore the energy of the self and the process of transformation. The heart is the fundamental power source of this transformation. By placing it at the center, I imagined it as a "switch" that nourishes and guides our identity. The fibers surrounding it are not just organic extensions; they represent the new paths and directions that emerge with every new formation of the self. As the evolving self continues to rediscover itself, these paths change, expand, and sometimes intertwine into different forms.
If our bodies could truly generate new forms, how would that change your design approach?
I don’t think it would change my design language because I always draw from my roots. However, as someone who loves to explore, I would be excited to discover new forms. Perhaps this exploration would bring more innovation and uniqueness to my design process.
How would you describe the impact of a handmade prop in this shoot?
I believe the handmade props in this shoot added significant depth both visually and emotionally. The combination of digital and organic elements created a true visual spectacle.
How do you evaluate the impact of technology, especially artificial intelligence, on fashion and design?
Artificial intelligence has revolutionized the world of fashion and design. Especially for impatient designers like me, it has become an excellent tool for accelerating the process. It also helps bring to life forms that were previously difficult to imagine. However, when not combined with an organic thought process, something feels missing: "emotion." This is something that can only be achieved through handmade and human touch. Blending digital with organic and achieving their harmony results in truly remarkable works. The future in this sense is quite exciting.
